Plastic profiles that look straight when they leave the press can lose their shape quickly if they are stored the wrong way. If you have ever opened a pallet of extrusion plastic only to find curves where there should be clean lines, you know how fast things can fall behind. Install schedules get squeezed, field teams waste hours trying to correct fit issues, and pressure builds to explain why stock did not meet spec.
With February’s heat bearing down, especially across regions like New South Wales, poor storage can turn a solid batch into a problem just a few days later. It does not take much, just the wrong stack, a bit of sun, or too long without rotation. Most of this can be avoided. It comes down to understanding how warping starts and putting simple actions in place to stop it.
Understand Why Warping Happens in the First Place
Customers often ask why some profiles seem to twist or bow during storage even when they looked perfect at dispatch. It usually begins with a mix of leftover tension in the plastic and the way the environment interacts with it over time.
Plastic keeps a bit of memory from the extrusion process. As it cools, the outer surface sets faster than the inside, which holds some stress. That stress does not always show itself right away. But under the wrong storage conditions, the tension finds its way out, and the profile starts to change shape.
Temperature and humidity play a big role. Warm days followed by cooler nights, especially in parts of New South Wales, create small but repeated changes that build up. Then there is stacking. If loads are not supported evenly or too much pressure is placed on a certain point, you will see the results down the line in a bend or twist. Most of our extrusion profiles are produced in PVC thermoplastics that can be recycled almost infinitely, and we also extrude ABS and ASA for projects that call for different performance characteristics.
Choose the Right Storage Environment
Good storage starts well before the jobsite. Keeping profiles in clean shape means finding a space that protects them not just from physical damage, but from daily weather cycles too.
Here is what we recommend watching for:
• Find a shaded area that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Even a few hours of UV on the same face can cause flat spots or warping.
• Keep materials away from windows or machinery that gives off heat. Radiated warmth may not seem like much but can cause long-term distortion.
• For outdoor setups, use covered sheds or temporary shelters that block rainfall and allow airflow. Closed containers may trap heat during warmer months.
Even with short-term storage, it pays to be thoughtful. Profiles kept in the wrong spot for even one week can start to drift out of tolerance before anyone notices.
Use Proper Stacking to Protect Profile Shape
Stacking is not just about saving space, it shapes how the profile will behave later when it is in use. Flat, clean stacks protect not just the outer faces, but the load-bearing strength of each profile inside.
To avoid warping from compression or uneven support, we prefer this approach:
• Always stack on a level base with firm supports underneath, like timber runners spread at equal gaps
• Do not overstack. High piles build pressure at the base and can cause visible bending during hot days
• Keep all profiles in the bundle running the same direction. Alternating positions increases stress at the join zones
If profiles need to be layered, make sure spacers have repeatable spacing to avoid pressure points. What seems minor during loading becomes major when it reaches the install crew.
Pay Attention to Packaging and Wrapping
Packaging does more than stop scuff marks. How it is applied, and what it is made from, determines how the profile handles heat and moisture shift over time.
Some helpful guidelines:
• Use breathable wrapping materials instead of fully sealed plastic. This helps heat escape and stops moisture buildup
• For humid summer days, consider woven wraps or mesh covers that protect without trapping warm air
• Never bend wrapped bundles around uneven pallets or leave them unsupported. The plastic can slowly reshape to match the flaw
Check wrapping for sweating or signs of trapped condensation during storage. Moisture does not just impact shape, it can subtly break down the surface finish or lead to mold if left unchecked in humid areas.
Rotate Stock and Track Storage Time
Even profiles in ideal storage can warp if they have been there too long. Rotation keeps fresh product moving in and older materials out before they lose tolerance.
Keeping extrusion plastic in shape is often just a matter of getting the flow right:
• Always go with a first-in, first-out method, especially in large-volume storage
• Mark deliveries with clear intake dates and batch codes for easy tracking
• Set a maximum storage period after which profiles need to be re-checked for shape accuracy
If profiles sit for more than a few weeks in high summer without movement, chances go up for noticeable shifts in shape. Setting limits on shelf life for each profile shape or application lowers the risk of rework or install rejection later.
Keep Your Profiles Straight for Faster Installs
Small changes in profile shape cause big problems on site. When parts do not slide, click, or cap like they should, installers lose time, production gets blamed, and the finish suffers. That is why it makes sense to spend time thinking ahead before the pallet even gets unwrapped.
By picking the right storage spot, stacking smart, wrapping with care, and keeping older stock moving out, we protect the shape our products were meant to hold. The result is fewer problems during install and fewer faults traced back to storage issues. It means jobs run smoother, teams stay focused, and clients are not chasing us with questions about poor fits or bent stock. Taking this a bit more seriously now saves everyone bigger headaches later.
Across our production facility we run on green electricity from a 275 kW rooftop solar system and recycle 97% of production waste, so the way profiles are stored supports both reliable performance and responsible manufacturing.
